Our
story
MARÍA-JOSÉ BENAVIDES
My name is María-José Benavides Mora. I am 32 years old. I lived the first 24 years of my life in Santiago. My early school years at a prestigious high achievement institution in the British educational tradition, instilled in me freedom of thought. I continued to develop my skills during high school being appointed as a student leader every year. I was also a field hockey player for the Universidad Católica team, from age 9. I obtained a Best Hockey Player award. However, at age 23 due to an injury, I was no longer able to play. I obtained my degree in Psychology at Diego Portales University and I find myself in love with psychoanalysis. I also received a Diploma in Business Administration. And today, I am a student of Ecopsychology.

In 2014 I arrived in Aysen while backpacking during my final summer at university. This was where my life changed. I felt a hunch. This was the place where I had to live, specifically the Explorers Valley captivated me. The villagers I met, their kindness and warm welcome completely enchanted me as well. While preparing to complete my degree, I also looked for ways immersed myself in nature and live in the forest after graduation.
At the beginning of 2015 I came to live in Puerto Río Tranquilo. During the first few years I worked here in rural institutions for the school integration program., until I felt I needed to start a business of my own. In 2016 I opened the first outdoor accessories store “Ciprés del bayo” which was located on the waterfront of Tranquilo. That was a valuable learning experience about business and entrepreneurship. Later, I continued with community work, focusing on sustainability issues for rural businesses, and outdoor education for schoolchildren in the Lake General Carrera basin and Patagonia Park.
I love being in the midst of nature, I am in awe and appreciate how perfect it is. I feel that my purpose is for biophilia to grow in the hearts of all people, for those who come to these places to be able to slow down and breathe in nature. In 2020, along with Marco, we embarked on the most fantastic and challenging journey: to raise our son, in the most natural way possible, surrounded by nature and lots of love. We live in the countryside, with a small regenerative forest project of our own in the middle of our lot. We have been exploring how the forest develops without livestock or logging.
I participate in the supervisory boards of the regional group Aisén Reserva de Vida and the ecological, cultural, and social group Tzónecas de Puerto Río Tranquilo. I am a member of the Chamber of Tourism and Commerce of Puerto Río Tranquilo and take part in the Corporation for the Development of Sustainable Tourism in the Lake Chelenko basin.

MARCO FUSTER
My name is Marco. I am 40 years old. I was born in the city of El Salvador, in the Atacama region of Chile. Later I moved to Rancagua because of my father's job. I also lived part of my childhood on my grandparents' ranch in Linares. I have beautiful childhood memories. Lots of vacations with cousins and long hikes venturing into nature. It is no wonder I am a lover of outdoor life and sports. Starting my school years at a prestigious high achievement institution in the British educational tradition helped in my personal growth from an early age. And it was at Andrés Bello University that I completed my professional development obtaining my degree in Environmental Engineering.

My first jobs were in Santiago, then I moved to Valdivia, where I finally decided that I should go into business on my own. Looking for ways of accomplishing this, I started working on entrepreneurship pathways among remarkable people with valuable knowledge and a big hearth. They helped me build the foundation and accomplish everything I had in mind.
Eight years ago, I moved to the region of Aysen, Chilean Patagonia, chasing my dream of connecting people with nature. My adventure began in Puerto Guadal, a place that welcomed me with great affection. This is where I had the opportunity to work for several lodges in the area, as a guide and administrator. Finally, because of coincidences in life I met a great friend, who made me an offer to go work for her company in Puerto Río Tranquilo. In my position as a travel administrator, I coordinated trips to the San Rafael lagoon. Based on this knowledge I developed over the years concerning tourism and the region, I got the necessary strength and motivation to get started on my current project.
I am a member of the ecological, cultural, and social group Tzónecas of Puerto Río Tranquilo, and I have focused on carrying out various environmental projects on household waste, recycling and circular economy.
Against this stunning natural backdrop, I met María José, my life partner. Thanks to her perseverance, drive and support it has been possible to embark on this project, “Tranquilo to Patagonia.” From our union came our son Raimundo, another project that has meant a 180-degree change in my life. It encourages me to get up every day to try to give him more and more. Now we live in the countryside surrounded by nature, far from so-called civilization, but connected to everything valuable that life gives us.
